Summary:
The Forensic Entomology Technician will be responsible for providing expertise and support in the field of forensic entomology, assisting in the collection, analysis, and interpretation of entomological evidence for criminal investigations. This role requires a strong understanding of insect biology, the ability to effectively collect and preserve entomological samples, and the skills to analyze and report findings accurately.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct detailed entomological investigations at crime scenes, including outdoor and indoor locations, to identify and collect insect evidence.
- Employ appropriate entomological sampling techniques such as pitfall traps, baited traps, sticky traps, and sweep nets to capture and preserve insects for analysis.
- Analyze collected entomological samples using microscopy and other laboratory equipment to identify species, developmental stages, and associated factors relevant to the investigation.
- Prepare comprehensive reports detailing the entomological findings, including relevant data, observations, and interpretations.
- Collaborate with forensic scientists, law enforcement officials, and legal professionals to provide expert opinions and testimony regarding entomological evidence in court proceedings.
- Maintain accurate records of all collected samples, analysis procedures, and findings, ensuring adherence to chain of custody protocols.
- Stay updated on the latest advancements, research, and techniques in the field of forensic entomology and participate in relevant training and professional development activities.
- Assist in the maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment, ensuring their proper functioning and compliance with safety protocols.
- Adhere to ethical guidelines and maintain confidentiality in handling sensitive information related to criminal investigations.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Forensic Science, Biology, Entomology, or a closely related field is required. A higher degree in the field is preferred.
- Proven experience working in the field of forensic entomology, preferably within a law enforcement or research setting.
- Expert knowledge of insect biology, taxonomy, and behavior, particularly as it relates to forensic investigations.
- Proficiency in entomological sampling techniques, preservation methods, and laboratory analysis of insect evidence.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to accurately interpret and report findings.
- Excellent organizational and time management abilities to handle multiple cases simultaneously and meet deadlines.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to collaborate with diverse stakeholders and present findings clearly and concisely.
- Attention to detail and meticulousness in handling and documenting evidence to maintain the integrity of the investigation.
- Familiarity with relevant software applications and tools for data analysis and report preparation.
- Knowledge of legal procedures and courtroom experience in providing expert testimony is an asset.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
